1000 years of history in 2 hours...

Arrived at Bayeux - lesson number three - update your Sat Nav before setting off. No doubt Madame Flaubert of 3 Rue de Jean Mermoz was as surprised as I was to find there was no Ibis Budget hotel there. Some Franglais later, back at the brand new Ibis Budget on the outskirts of Bayeux and no harm done to the Entent Cordiale.

Ducked into town to see famous tapestries (or embroidery for the QI pedants out there). Good fun - the English language commentary is vintage home counties ex public school boy civil servant stuff. Although familiar with the story the actual tapestry is full of surprises and interesting details including rude bits that never get taught to you at school.

Presumably the French 7 and 8 year olds on a tour today are not as shocked by such things as us English types.

Did the tour and then went for a run along Gold Beach at Arromanches! So this was it - D-Day!. Beautiful day for a jog and the tide was out so the spectacular remains of the artificial harbour created in the days after June 6th can still be seen. Terrific feat of engineering. I'll upload more when I have a fast connection! Off to Utah beach tomorrow - US landing zone.
