Langemarck is one of the biggest German cemeteries in Belgium with other 44,000 bodies. In one large communal grave our 25,000 bodies. Visually the cemetery is quite different to those of the British and French. It is dark and sombre. At this one the brooding atmosphere is further enhanced by a four figure sculpture of grieving soldiers.
The names of the missing are also engraved on a series of massive stones - the effect is disturbing and in a different way to the engraved names on monuments like the Menin Gate or Tyne Cot.
