Went to Peronne this morning to see the Somme museum housed in the old citadel. Peronne was behind German lines for most of the War and was finally liberated in August 1918. The action of the Australian 2 Div in taking the high ground of Mont St Quentin was pivotal and desperate. They lost over 3000 casualties often in bitter hand to hand fighting. Once it was over they had 14,500 prisoners and 170 guns. Peronne fell on Sept 3rd.
A fine statue...and even if I say it myself a fine piece of photography to get the flag in!
