Stopped for a fine lunch in Namur on the way across Belgium. This is another of the string of Vauban forts that were built to protect France from invasion. This is a great example too - built on the headland overlooking the Meuse it is pretty much impregnable from this angle.
Which is why the Germans simply went round it in 1914 and then battered the town with heavy artillery until it surrendered.
This line on Vauban forts is all building up into a trip to Verdun over the next couple of days.
