Irish section - Ulster and Connaught at Thiepval Wood

The only real success on July 1st for Haig's plan came with the Ulsters. Four VCs were won that day which gives some idea of how hard it was. They were the only ones to get beyond the first set of German defensive positions. Because of that they had to withdraw at the end of the day pretty much back to where they started.
